A dramatic finale at Rawlins saw CSKA rescue all three points just as it looked as if the win had been snatched away from them by a competitive Lutterworth Athletic side.

The Mods made a few changes from last week’s cup heroics. Tom Marshall replaced the departed Jack Ellis whilst Dan Danes, Matt Danes and Josh McDougall were all recalled to the starting line-up.

Lutterworth Athletic started well and moved the ball up to their tall forwards quickly, a couple of early snatched chances allowed CSKA to settle and eventually get into a passing grove that eventually led to the opening goal when Josh McDougall was played through by Olly Arnold to rattle the ball into the bottom corner, his fourth goal of an impressive campaign.

On the right flank Josh McDougall was electric, bursting through beyond the full back on several occasions only to be denied on a couple of occasions by some terrific goalkeeping.

The defence started to settle and Connor Williams and Matt Westerman both had opportunities to score coming out from defence brilliantly up the pitch. In midfield Dan Danes and Hiran Mistry seemed in complete control of the game, allowing the forward players to pressure the defence more which would eventually lead to the second goal coming from a neat passing combo between Matt Danes and Brad Parker who got through to bury his third of the campaign.

A stunning strike from the left wing brought Lutterworth back into the game as the teams went into the break at 2-1.

CSKA piled the pressure on in the second half, and persistently asked questions of the Lutterworth defence who stood strong. Chances seemed to fall for Arnold, but was never quite able to get into a good shooting position.

At the other end, the CSKA defence were strong and swept up any counter-attacks with great recoveries, and when called into action goalkeeper Phil Luengtin was alert and agile. CSKA pressed and pressed for the decisive third, Dave Payne had a great chance from a header late on, and a full length run from Olly Arnold down the left wing flashed narrowly wide. Brad Parker’s penalty appeal was waved away after he was tripped in the box, and after a controversial backpass was picked up by the Lutterworth goalkeeper, the visitors raced forward and got in behind and finished well to make it 2-2 on the 90th minute.

The draw felt like a bitter pill to swallow for CSKA who had been on top for so long in the game. But the drama wasn’t finished, and after a clash of heads paused the game momentarily, CSKA reacted brilliantly to the restart with Matt Danes nicking the ball and playing it through to Olly Arnold who finished emphatically to scenes of mass celebrations.

And there was even time for another, as Lutterworth were forced to go backwards and Arnold’s high press won him the ball just outside the box and allowed him to finish and take him to 15 for the season.

A dramatic conclusion and a great spectacle for the fans, but for CSKA it was relief at getting the job finally done.

The win moves CSKA onto 22 points, now 7 points clear of 4th and just 3 points behind Top House in 2nd.

Manager's Comments

It’s a strange one to be celebrating an injury-time winner in a game where we were in control of for so long. We’ve had games this season where we’ve not taken our chances and it’s punished us, so thankfully today wasn’t another one of those.

Finishing and creativity in the final third is all stuff that this talented group will get better at, but for these lads to show the mentality to reset and go and grab the victory in injury-time despite having conceded late in the previous league game shows incredible maturity and this is the most encouraging thing.

CSKA Man of the Match

Having players like Olly Arnold in your team give you so much confidence that your team will score goals. Got himself into some great positions today, pressed well, and his link up play with the midfield was very good. The right chance just never quite fell to him. But when it did, and  the pressure was on, Olly delivered. Second goal epitomises what he’s added to his game this season, with a high press to win the ball, and a composed finish.
