CSKA Carnabys concluded the 2023/24 with a traditional end of season blow out, preceded by the Season Awards handed out to the individuals who were recognised by management, players, and fans.
The season itself represented CSKA’s highest league finish in the club’s history, ending up 4th in Division One, as well as Arthur Moore Cup Semi-Finalist. Also winning the Team of the Month Award for the first time ever. Whilst for CSKA II it was their strongest campaign in 5 seasons, with 9 competitive victories in all competitions.
Midfielder Hiran Mistry was voted by his fellow players for the main award, coming in ahead of Connor Williams in second place, and Tej Shah in third. Hiran excelled in this campaign and when asked to move to a deeper role at the mid-way point in the season, he adapted with ease and put in some of his best performances in a CSKA shirt, notably 3 Man of the Match performances in each of the Arthur Moore Cup games against Premier League sides.
Tom Marshall received the top accolade for CSKA II after a remarkable season that saw him take on a new role as centre-back, that would eventually result in him taking on the leadership of the defence following injury to Gaz Walker. Tom had performances that were highly rated by his team-mates all throughout the season, as well as providing two moments of brilliance in his Goal of the Season contenders. Kept it clean all season too with no cards shown, and eventually was handed the captain’s armband for the final game of the season.
Manager’s Player of the Season went to goalkeeper Tejas Shah. McCafferty was keen to acknowledge Shah on the back of numerous match winning performances throughout the season, as well as his adaptation to the sweeper role that allowed CSKA to play with greater confidence on the ball from the back and allow his defence to play closer to the midfield.
There were some significant performances throughout the season, notably the County Cup win away at Braunstone Irons during normal time and in the penalty shootout, the home victory over Top House and Birstall Social away.
Tej has also been instrumental in the development of the new crop of young keepers at CSKA, Ben Lewin and Nogk Luengtin. He will be a big loss for next season.
Tom Marshall was chosen as Bav Gangajalia’s Player of the Season. Tom grew as a player throughout the campaign and gave everything for his manager, that would eventually earn him the captain’s armband.
Hiran Mistry was the winner of the CSKA Fans’ Player for the second year running, after accumulating 56 MotM votes throughout the season.
Like Hiran, Sean Brown also retained the Fans’ Player award.
Young goalkeeper Nogk “Phil” Luengtin was the clear winner of the Best Newcomer, coming in at a crucial point in the season, he made a very impressive start with 4 victories in his first 4 appearances. Played a key role in CSKA’s Arthur Moore Cup campaign.
CSKA Wunderkind, Olly Arnold picked up his second Golden Boot with an impressive 16 goal haul that also saw him finish 2nd overall in the Division One Golden Boot. It takes his CSKA total to 38 goals and is already the 8th top scorer in the club’s history. Olly recovered brilliantly from an injury scare during pre-season and added more to his game in terms of assisting and high-press.
With 11 goals, Paul Gilding picked up his first CSKA Golden Boot after an impressive season despite balancing injuries and unavailability.
Connor Williams’s beautifully struck free-kick back in November was the winner of the Goal of the Season award. Not only was it a great strike, but it was a strike that gave the whole team a lift at a crucial part of the game that almost resulted in a spectacular comeback.
Tom Marshall’s thunderbolt against Leicester Town at Rawlins Stadium was the clear winner for CSKA II’s Goal of the Season. He fought off a sentimental few votes for Bav’s send off goal to win this award for the second year running.
The newest award was won by Ben Lewin, whose triple save compilation at home to Habesha impressed his team mates the most. Hiran Mistry came a close second when his last ditch goal-line clearance against Sileby Athletic kept the score at 0-0.
This award was for the player who has raised his game the most, and when I look at where they were last season compared to now, Josh is the standout winner. In and out of the reserve team to now being a key player for CSKA in a challenging role that relies on creativity, pace and running throughout. Josh has excelled and put in brilliant performances weekly, gives everything at training and even started adding goals to his game.
Caine Ward wins the CSKA Clubman Award. Not only did he have the best matchday and training attendance throughout the season, his hard work and graft in matches and training doesn’t go unnoticed. Always in good spirits in sessions, bringing a positive vibe to the group and mixing well with his team mates.
