C5KA Carnabys

5K Weekly Running Challenge

Introducing for the 2024/25 season, the CSKA 5K weekly challenge.

I know many of you will see this as a gruelling addition to our training schedules, but my hope is that we have as many of the squad players taking part in the weekly challenge throughout the season in a bid to boost our overall fitness, stamina and competitiveness.

What is the Challenge?

Quite simply, over a 7 day period you need to grab your trainers and head out for a 5km run.

Upload your run to the C5KA Group on Strava (link here), and then look to improve this time over the course of the season.

F-CK That! I hate running!

I understand this completely, I’m not a fan of running 5Ks myself. But the more of us in the squad who take part in this, the more likely others are to join in, and that can only be a good thing for the squad.

We are all in this season together, and together we want to be achieving success, so I want you all to push yourselves and part of that will be to look for those little 1% gains that will benefit you, your teammates and the club.

Once habit is formed, it will hopefully be an easy part of your week. This is a great time of the year to start that habit, it’s not too cold and it’s not too warm.

Benefits

I could list a lot of cardiovascular benefits to regular running, but we’re not interested in that. We’re interested in how this is going to make us better footballers. It will make us fitter, if we are fitter we will have increased stamina. Improved blood flow will help with decision making on the pitch. It will help with injury prevention, therefore maximising your playing time. And then there’s the confidence that you’ll gain from being fitter.

I’m not suggesting that running 5K weekly will make you the ultimate athlete, but it will certainly improve your game and therefore our chances of winning games.

I want you to take this opportunity to challenge yourself physically. If you’ve never ran a 5K, give it a go.

Challenge 1 will be to complete a 5K run. This may mean that you need to stop for a rest (or rests) during your run, but do finish it.

Challenge 2 will be to complete a 5K run without stopping. This may take a number of attempts, but it will happen.

Challenge 3+ will hopefully occur organically. You will look to improve your time

Good luck lads, and hopefully see your runs logged on the Strava group soon.
