⚽️⚽️⚽️ McDougall

🅰️🅰️ Annear

CSKA II wrote themselves into the club’s history books by bringing home the club’s first piece of silverware after 17 years of waiting.

In what was the club’s first ever final also, a first half Josh McDougall hat-trick won the tie, with the opposition left without answers.

Both teams entered the final on the back of disappointing league defeats, both losing 5-1 on Sunday, with AFC Shoemakers’s defeat actually costing them a league title. This caused a change in management in the week, Casey Houlihan taking charge. Alliance League’s top goalscorer Callum Key was unavailable, whilst CSKA II suffered an injury blow midweek as creative midfielder Ben Ragg suffered another shoulder dislocation. Dave Thompson passed a late fitness test following a scare on the previous game.

It was a cagey start in the late spring sunshine at Holmes Park, Shoemakers showing threats mostly from set pieces, with Josh Tank being called into action very early on. Shivan Solanki was showing to be CSKA II’s best outlet from left wing-back and repeated beating of his man really stretched the game a provided much needed respite for the defence. But Shoemakers’s persistence on one corner paid off after bundling home at the third attempt to take a deserved lead.

CSKA II’s response however was exemplary, the high-pressing duo of Josh McDougall and Connor Wills caused absolute havoc in the Shoemakers defence leading to a series of poor clearances that eventually allowed Wills to rob the ‘keeper and square to McDougall for an open net finish.

With Shoemakers now struggling to keep possession and dictate any sort of play, CSKA II punished further, a clipped ball in behind the defence by Riley Annear allowed McDougall to smash the ball into the roof of the net just minutes later to give CSKA II the lead.

And McDougall wasn’t done yet. Having just taken over from Connor Wills in the race for the Golden Boot, Annear again placed the ball in behind the defence this time allowing McDougall to tap the ball around the onrushing goalkeeper and again tap into an open net. His first hat-trick as a CSKA Carnabys player.

The CSKA II players battled for everything in the second half, captain Tom Marshall picking this day to have one of his best performances in a CSKA shirt, whilst youngster Joe Garner wasn’t intimidated by any of the early challenges as he fought back with equal aggression in his challenges.

The second half passed by without any note of incident really, but having conceded a 3-1 lead in the semi-final, The Carneys knew what was required this time to ensure they saw out the remainder of the game.

Incredible scenes came at the end, and the CSKA lads partied well into the weekend, and deservedly so.

Having progressed to the final via 3 penalty shootout wins, it was a welcome break getting the job done in normal time.

CSKA Man of the Match

Showed determination and a desire to win a trophy. Pressurised defenders into mistakes and in the final third showed great teamsmanship to assist unselfishly for his strike partner.
