Chequemate! Unbeaten Mods Reach 1/4 Final

League Cup Fixture
Date: Sunday 09 May 2021
Venue: Rowland Ground
Referee: Darren Withers, Leics

CSKA Carnabys have reached the quarter finals of the Alliance Cup after a thumping win against Swinford Chequers.

The mods arrived in Swinford under heavy rain, needing a win and other results to go in their favour. With Parker ruled out, changes are made for the decisive fixture as Pettitt, Kennedy and Lucas replaced Mistry, McCafferty and King.

Nerves were evident for the Mods in the opening stages, as Augustus was almost caught out when the hosts had a number of early chances. A cute pass from Dave Payne sent an in-form Chapman through, and from a tight angle at the edge of the box he drove home an unstoppable finish. The early anxiety soon disappeared as Walker and Brice took control in defence, allowing left back Jack Lucas the freedom to drive forward and support the attack.

CSKA were not settling for 1-0 and as the half went on it looked more and more likely they would be adding to their tally. Petitt shot wide after a smart turn opened up space, while midfield-engine Adam Gent stung the palms of the Swinford keeper with a strike also. Dave Payne’s close control and pace were causing problems and the home side resorted to increasingly cynical challenges to stop him. No bookings from the ref.

Five minutes before the end of the half CSKA’s superiority was rewarded. A sloppy back pass to the keeper was charged down by Payne, allowing Chapman to slot his second into an empty net.

The host side changed things around for the second half, moving their impossibly-tall defender up front in an attempt to challenge the so-far unbeatable partnership of Walker and Brice, and the match became a much tighter contest.

CSKA remained largely in control, with Gent having two attempts within minutes of each other: the first denied by some desperate defending; his second rising just above the bar after a clever lay-off from Sean Brown.

As midfielder Liam Kennedy made way for Chris McCafferty in the 65th minute, Chapman failed to find the net from six yards after Brice nodded on a corner and then the striker is denied his hat trick when his headed effort from a sublime Dave Payne cross is spectacularly saved by the Swinford keeper. He made no mistake a few minutes later, as the substitute McCafferty’s corner is missed by the defender at the near post, Chapman rifled his and the club’s third into the roof of the net.

Swinford earned an 80th minute lifeline when the Mods failed to clear their lines allowing [Big Bastard] to fire in off the post. But any hopes for a late resurgence were swiftly put to bed as another fine Payne cross found Chapman to end the game 1-4.

The comprehensive win was only job half-done for the Carnabys. They faced an anxious few hours as they awaited results of other fixtures. Shortly after the game, news filtered through to the players in the car park and heads dropped as they learned of Midland’s 5-2 victory over Sileby to win the group, consigning CSKA to 3rd and as it stood not qualifying for the quarter finals. They needed Suecastle to lose or draw.

Minutes became an hour. Finally, as they shared a post-match pint, the news came through of a 5-0 win. For Oadby Athletic.

CSKA Carnabys are in the quarter finals of the Alliance cup, and face an away tie at Division 1 side The Plough Inn Bruntingthorpe. A tough match ahead for sure, but the Mods will be confident in themselves and driven by the thought that they’re 90 minutes away from a semi.
