FC Poplar 1-2 CSKA (Friendly) 3 in a Row for Mods

Friendly Fixture
Date: Sunday 22 August 2021
Venue: Loughborough Drome
Referee: Terry Simmons, Leics

Another fine pre-season display saw CSKA come out on top in a tight affair against regular pre-season opponents FC Poplar.

CSKA were without Adam Gent who was still hampered by ankle issues, whilst Jack Westley and Danny Chapman were also unavailable, but Richard Augustus was once again available for selection following his positive COVID test.

Brad Parker led the line for CSKA in their familiar 4-4-1-1 system.

The Mods took the lead very early on, McCafferty’s corner was headed home by Nathan Tate with ease. And there were chances to extend that lead with Parker and then McCafferty thwarted by the Poplar goalkeeper.

The hosts equalised after an uncharacteristic error whilst playing out from the back allowed a soft goal to be conceded. But CSKA responded superbly, Nathan Tate slipped McCafferty through who’s by-line cross was flicked in by Brad Parker.

After a consultation with the linesman, the goal was eventually awarded to give CSKA the lead.

Connor Williams was introduced at half-time at centre-back for Jon Brice, who was then suddenly forced back onto the pitch when Gaz Walker pulled up with a groin issue.

Nathan Tate bossed the midfield and dictated the play, allowing CSKA to professionally see out the game and come away with a first ever victory in this fixture.

Tate’s outstanding performance saw him claim the Man of the Match award.

CSKA will host Oadby Owls in the final pre-season tie and are looking in great shape ahead of the season opener in September.
