Enderby Ransack Fortress Rawlins Unbeaten Home Run Ends

League Fixture
Date: Sunday 7 November 2021
Venue: Rawlins Stadium
Referee: Adam Crosby-Smith, Leics

CSKA Carnabys were dismantled this weekend in what was an embarrassing first loss at home for the club in over a year.

Going into the game with a 100% home record, CSKA had the chance to close in on the top two who were already beginning to form a gap at the top of Division 2. The meeting was a repeat of the pre-season fixture where the Mods clawed back from 3 goals down to ultimately lose 5-4. This time around though, the result was rather different.

Having missed out last week against Black Dog Oadby, Augustus and Brice returned to the first team. Manni Rai stepped into midfield alongside Nathan Tate, with Adam Gent playing on the left. A marquee occasion for Chris McCafferty as he made his 300th appearance for CSKA. Danny Chapman returned to his usual centre forward position despite an impressive display at left back on his previous outing.

Enderby took an early lead when a ball down the left flank was pulled across for a simple strike past Augustus on the edge of the box.

Manni Rai almost responded moments later with a sublime effort which cracked the post, as well as having a header that was gathered by the commanding goalkeeper.

A mistake at the back however was pounced on by Chapman, who slipped it past the keeper to make it 1-1

Midway through the first half CSKA were caught lacking when an uncharacteristic sloppy pass by Tate when playing out from the back was pounced upon by Enderby and converted. The Mods seemed to switch off from there as they let their heads drop. There was a sudden lack of fight and desire as second was conceded, and the team appeared to go into hiding as 1-2 soon became 1-3, then 1-4. The fans on the side lines bemoaned a lack of desire and complete evaporation of spirit as a counter attack from a CSKA corner made it 1-5.

Fans and players alike scratched their heads at how the game had turned so quickly. Enderby were hardly playing champagne football, CSKA were just second to every ball and beaten by route-one tactics. Passing was rushed, poor and composure was non-existent. A big change at half-time was needed, but the damage had already been done.

The directive for the second half was simple, go out and win the half and wholesale changes were made at the interval to reinvigorate the team. Gaz Walker came on for Sean Brown to make his 100th appearance for the club, moving Connor Williams to right-back. Jack Westley made way for Brad Parker as CSKA switched to a flat 4-4-2.

Parker’s impact on the game was immediate. In the early stages of the second half the attacker showed grit and determination, despite over aggressive tactics by the Enderby players who did their best to rile him. Some superb footwork on the edge of the box saw his shot saved only for Chapman to follow up the rebound for his second of the game. That strike also saw him equal Jon rice’s tally of 69 goals for the club.

At the other end, Gaz Walker was in fine form dealing with a flurry of counter-attacks from the visitors. But a series of time wasting tactics dragged the game out and prevented CSKA building on their early promise in the second half. .

Into the final 10 minutes and  Dan Danes came on for his CSKA debut along with Andy Pettitt for damage limitation. With almost the final kick of the game, having been kept quiet throughout, Chris McCafferty couldn’t cap his landmark appearance with a goal when he rounded the keeper and bundled the ball wide.

Full-time 5-2 and the end of a sorry performance from the Mods. Gaz Walker earned the Player of the Match award for a performance that prevented the score-line from being even worse. Having been on the fringes of a title challenge, this damning defeat has severely affected those ambitions.

While it may have been just a ‘bad day at the office’, this isn’t the first time the team’s performance has come under scrutiny this season. If the Mods want success this season, they need to do away with their yo-yoing form, and find some consistency.
